Mission
The Little Chompers program is a subset of the International Swim Team designed for swimmers who are not quite ready to compete in meets but are ready to learn the techniques of competitive swimming. The Little Chompers program is great preparation for competitive swimming, with the goal to have the swimmers compete in at least one meet, swimming 25m freestyle and/or backstroke, by the end of the swim season. They also have their very own Lollipop Meet at the last practice every season!
Qualifications
The Little Chompers Program is designed for swimmers who are well adjusted to the water, ready to learn the fundamental techniques of freestyle and backstroke, and able to take direction from the coaches. Little Chompers are expected to have already learned the basic swim skills of kicking, floating and progressive stroke.
To join the Little Chompers swimmers must:
- be able to fully and comfortably submerge their face and body underwater
- be able to float on their stomach and/or back
- be comfortable swimming away from the wall to a coach
Practice
The swimmers will receive personalized attention and swim in a supportive and enthusiastic environment! Little Chompers will have 30 minute weekday practices after the end of the FCPS school year from 11:00-11:30am. There will be no afternoon make-up practice available to the Little Chompers. Little Chompers are invited to all social activities and meets to watch and cheer!!
Swimmers who cannot swim the length of the pool without stopping at time trials will be referred to the Little Chompers Program. Once a swimmer is ready to transition to the competitive team, and has received approval from Head Coach Shelley, the swimmer will "graduate" from the Little Chompers Program and join the appropriate age-group practice. Some swimmers may swim with the Little Chompers for just a short time while they develop their swimming ability, while others may remain in Little Chompers for the entire season.
